Fruit was sourced from the Chianti Classico region from a vineyard with IGT classification planted with the ‘Brunello’ clone from a 24 year’ old vineyard. The fruit was hand picked. Not a very uniform growing season. A cooler flowering period resulted in reduced crops as much as 15% to 20% down. Cropping levels in our vineyard in San Casciano were at 5.25 tonnes/Hectare. Summer was very hot and dry, which saw some stress on the vines, but some early spring rains and moderating temperatures ensured fruit reached phenolic ripeness.

100% destemmed and fermented in open stainless pots. 10% was also fermented (and matured) in Amphora. Pumped over once per day for 15 days then 10 days post ferment maceration (lid on and sealed-infusion). Natural fermentation. Wine matured in French oak puncheons (10% new) plus the 10% in amphora for 14 months.

As seems to be the norm for the 2016 vintage this sangiovese has a strong deep colour. The nose is quite deep and concentrated also with morello cherry and blistered cherry but pleasantly also notes of fennel and lavender. Certainly a more aromatic vintage. Palate shows that northern chianti classico breadth and width with latent fruit power. Darker cherries, truffled notes and savoury detail build around the tannin/acid matrix. Fashionably late tannins leave no doubt that this a wonderful Tuscan vintage. Very similar to the much lauded 2006.

A good vintage in Tuscany, I believe. This comes from the Chianti Classico region (San Casciano), though the vineyard faces south, hence IGT, handpicked and 10% fermented, and raised in, amphora. 10% new puncheon in the mix. Baking spices, dark cherry, balsamic edge, dried herb and floral perfume. It’s medium-bodied, silky and deep, dark cherry and dark pipe tobacco, some lavender and rose mouth-perfume, and a plush finish of fine length. It’s a very good, ripe and robust wine, with savoury appeal and cocoa powder tannin trailing.
